It’s 9 am in the morning and one may think what makes me write a film review at such early morning time. Well last night I planned to watch Billu Barber, the latest Irrfan Khan starer in tinsel town, and so did download the movie; of course it’s neither a Oscar nominated movie nor a much talked about one, so no question of going to the theatre in this recession period. I woke up at 6 in the morning and it being a two and a half hours movie, with such sensitive and hair touchy inputs really made my post class-test sunday morning. Hats off to Priyadarshan.
The movie as such can be narrated in few words: a wretched village in Uttar Pradesh named Budbuda is the spot of the movie, Billu- Irfaan Khan is a poor barber who hardly has got any income through his dilapidated saloon, Lara Dutta his wife, plays a different role altogether but did justice to the character. Billu has got a daughter and a son. One fine morning Sahir Khan, played by Shahrukh Khan, who is a famous actor comes to the remote Budbuda village for shooting of his film, and like wildfire the news spreads that Sahir is a childhood friend of Billu, the barber. Though Billu himself tried not to let this news spread, but he could not stop the masses. Overnight he became a famous and important. His life changed, but not for long. After few days when he could not make people meet with Sahir Khan, people started giving allegations that Billu was a lier who played with their emotions. But being a typical bollywood movie a happy ending was expected and did take place. While addressing the masses in a local school program, chief guest Sahir Khan spoke about his upbringing, his childhood and his best friend Billu, who did sacrifice many of his ‘choti choti khushiyan’ for his friend Sahir. Now this was the scene with overflowing emotions , but enough to bring tears to one’s eyes. Apart from this some scenes had extraordinary comedy and dialogues. The movie potray’s that true relations are not dependent and also delivers a very important message that one must be true to himself and keep faith in himself, God will always take his side- “Bhagwan ke ghar der hai, andher nehi”. But to find out loophole of the movie I would say, it’s a bit unpredictable and that’s why probably couldn’t manage a ‘hit’ tag, afterall none wants to wasted money for some item numbers, which unfortunately became the shots for the trailers. Hence I would definitely ask my readers to go for the movie, it’s good watching, with family and friends a good timepass too, cause it teaches you without informing you.

well then got to watch the movie..
Reading ur review…i feel like u and i watched 2 different movies…are there are lke 2 versions of billu barber or something?
I thought the movie was horrible! It was so sappy and corny. Melodramatic, unrealistic… too karan joharish and sas-bhi-kabhi bahu. Man what are u talking about “bhgwan ke ghar der hai andher nahi”….thts so cliched…how many times have u heard that in hindi movies…how can u still stand it?
THe comedy was so slapstick…it was farce…not comedy! how could u laugh at that man? that was like govinda stuff.
The only reason i could actually bear to sit through the whole movie, which was immensely boring at parts, was due to my unfailing loyalty towards irfan khan’s acting skills.
well in that case I can only say, tastes differ, views differ. Also you are mistaken;”Bhagwan ke ghar… ” is used to describe the ultimatum of the movie, I never said that’s a bollywood material and all. It’s not at all unrealistic, place yourself in place of Billu and yes, change Sahir from a movie star to a rich man, in whatever form, you will find the reason.
