Abhijit came home from school mid-day and announced he was never going back. No ammount of coaxing would make him spill out why. “Amaye marte marte merey phelo, tao ami school jabona,” he cried out defiantly. The volunteers at the NGO tried to teach him for a few months but he kept running away to the sandy banks of the Ganga. The day they all gave up on him, he whispered to his mother at night, almost in his sleep: “You fuck your sisters at night, don’t you?” the bullies on the bus had asked him when they found out where he came from every morning. Abhijit had been 6 years old then and he never went back to school.
When he was 14 years old he slit the throat of a man who had had sex with his mother but had refused to pay her the settled amount. After court proceedings drawn out over more than a year, at the age of 15 years and 3 months he was sentenced to 14 years of imprisonment.
